A man in a grey suit carries a streetlight on his shoulder and a solar battery in his hand. At sunset, the streetlight begins to glow. The man sets off. When the burden becomes too heavy, he stops, straightens the light, and lingers.

Since 2009, the performance has travelled through cities and landscapes around the world, from Hamburg to Iceland to Lanzarote. The man moves among people and yet remains a stranger. With his streetlight, he belongs to public space and at the same time stands outside its order. He is on the move without ever truly arriving.

For Jan Philip Scheibe, the streetlight has been a symbol of home since his childhood. It marked the edge of his world: “to the streetlight and no further.” At the same time, it was the sign that it was time to come home. The man with the shouldered streetlight carries this home with him. For a moment, he sets it down wherever he happens to be.
